The Blues

One of the many things Curtis can be rememberd for is his masks. His first one had a trumpet on the top on each side, and a scroll of music on both sides on the throat protector. Just prior to the 91-92 NHL season, St. Louis signed free agent Brendan Shanahan from New Jersey. St. Louis offered Joseph and forward Rob Brind'Amour along with draft picks as compensation for the signing, but the Devils declined and asked for defenseman Scott Stevens. An independent arbitrator awarded Stevens to the Devils, and left the fans of St. Louis with the feeling of being robbed. In the following seasons Joseph became one of the NHL's elite goalies, making most forget about the loss of Stevens.

In the 1992-93 he was, arguably, the main reason the Blues reached the playoffs. That season, he lead goalies with a .911 save percentage. In the first round the Blues pulled one of the biggest upsets in Blues history as they swept the Blackhawks in four games. He has 105 consecutive saves in two straight shutouts. In the second round, he made save after save against the Toronto Maple Leafs, stretching the series to 7 games. In his loss in game one, he got a cut across the cheek that required some stitches. He left the game for two minutes, then came back out on the ice. If not for Doug Gilmour's late goal, that would've been the most hard earned win of his career. He really deserved that win. Everytime I see that game, I know that if he would've won, the Blues probably would've went to the Stanley Cup Finals.

This season saw the debut of the Cujo mask. A mad dog appeared to rip out of the top of his mask, while a scroll on the bottom declared that this was the mask of CuJo, The Mad Dog. The 1993-94 season was a record setting year. He set the record for most shots faced by a goaltender in a season. He also set the team record for most games and minutes played. He made his first All- Star appearence, but picked up the loss as the Eastern Conference beat the West. He and the Blues fell victim to the Dallas Stars in the playoffs. The Blues were swept in the first round, and made a premature exit. Joseph played merely normal. The Blues needed the super-human CuJo who helped them make the playoffs the year before.

This season marked the debut of his second CuJo mask. This mask was ment to look like a dog's head, complete with drooling, sharp, canine teeth and rabid eyes. In the lockout shortened 1995 season, CuJo had a career best in his GAA and was among the leaders in wins all season long. The Blues were finally respectable, but not without a price. Then Coach and GM Mike Keenan had a nick with playing mind games with the players. Cujo was one of his victims, along with Craig Janney and Brendan Shanahan They played the Canucks in the first round of the playoffs. They were expected to beat them in 5 games. The Canucks took them to seven Curtis had real good nights, and real bad nights. However, he was not the sole reason the Blues lost that playoff series. Here's a little food for thought. CuJo was 3 wins and 3 losses. That doesn't sound like a loosing record to me, does it? And If the Blues would've had Shanahan in the final game, they probably would've won. As the seconds ticked down in the final period of game seven, I knew that St. Louis would be loosing a lot more than just a playoff series. Joseph was traded in the offseason. His rights were sent to the Oilers for some draft picks. And the Blues also traded Shanahan. The Blues haven't been very competitive untill the 97-98 season, where they are now among the best in the league.
